Drug Resistance by AISSMS College Of Pharmacy

Nowadays, the use of antibiotics has become so common that even for a simple Flu or fever. It is the role of the pharmacist to check and report any irrational prescription of antibiotics to the physician and counsel the patients regarding the seriousness of it.

Drug resistance is the emerging and most pressing concern of the day. In simple words, Drug resistance suggests the ability of the pathogens (mostly bacteria) to infect and grow even in the presence of an antimicrobial agent used or the ineffectiveness of the drug to target and prevent the infection by any microbe.

                    Food is the foundation of life and the reason of death as food is both a nourisher and destroyer. And so it is said, we are what we eat. With time we have discovered many medicines and many diseases and yet again many medicines to take care of those newly found diseases, which not going to end by any means. And above all have conquered all diseases? Practically, no. We are struggling very hard to come up with new molecules with a hope of making things better.
                   Do I really need to enlist the benefits of exercise? Ultimately, the essence is, stick to your basics and see the change. Globalization may help you to move ahead to achieve the unbelievable, but your anna (food) will keep you what your are.

Patient adherence is the extent to which the patient follows the instructions of his physician.

The reasons patients don’t take or discontinue their medicines is multifactorial and depends on the disease and drug regimen. Hence our approach too has to be multipronged rather than one size fits all. First we need to ask, has the patient been adequately counselled on the disease process? Has he understood what the consequences of not taking his medication

eg. Discontinuing TB treatment midway could result in him developing resistance to the medicines and it will not be effective next time.
